Our district is participating in the Washington State 2016 Healthy Youth Survey from October 10th–21st.
The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, risk and protective factors, access to school-based services, and sexual behaviors, abuse and orientation. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.
The Healthy Youth Survey is given to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 across Washington State.
Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students’ answers are anonymous.
Please read the Parent and Student Notification flyer for more information about the Healthy Youth Survey.

First Ever English Language Acquisition Award
Royal Middle School Receives First Ever English Language Acquisition Award
Royal School District is proud to announce that Royal Middle School is one of four middle schools in Washington state to receive the first ever English Language Acquisition Award. The Washington State Board of Education created this award to recognize schools whose ELL students are making the greatest progress towards the goal of becoming proficient in English, which is a stepping stone to career and college-readiness.
“Given the increasing number of English Language Learners entering our schools, it is important to recognize the great work staff are doing in assisting our students towards English language acquisition,” said Dr. Gil Mendoza, Assistant Superintendent, Special Programs and Federal Accountability at OSPI. “Foundational skills in the English language are essential to achieving academic success. The efforts of the award-winning schools have gone unheralded for years, yet thousands of students from this important group have gone on to be motivated and succeed in school due to their and others’ untiring efforts.”
The award criteria is based on the Washington State English Language Proficiency Assessment (WELPA) of which nearly 1700 schools across the state use to assess their ELL students. The award recognizes approximately the top five percent of elementary, middle, and high schools based on the school’s median point gain on the 2012-13 WELPA. Award winning schools must also have met 2012-13 Annual Measurable Achievement Objective (AMAO) 1 and AMAO 2 federal accountability targets.
